Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
