They're Doing in America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of a few weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his designs for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' toward 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a figure of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his crime policy states that when someone steals your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing also.

The evident and straightforward reality that the Jesus from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Finest of Us

Hence I have become inspired to observe the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in large quantities in the off-year elections. We shall require to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by reference to the finest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most negative about the nation and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both humility and faith, a blend that serious American Christians should be comfortable with.
