Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
